  • Kawauchi Suwa Shrine Annual Festival

    This festival held in the Tsugaike area features a variety of both traditional and modern entertainment, from a shinto dance ritual peformed by local girls and known as “Urayasu-no-mai”, to pro-wrestling style performances between masked local men. Festival’s Eve festivities are held on Saturday evening in Tsugaike’s Central Parking Lot, while the main ceremonies are held at the Kawauchi Suwa Shrine on Sunday afternoon.

  • Chikuni Suwa Shrine Annual Festival

    Chikuni Suwa Shrine Annual Festival

    This unique local festival in Otari Village borders on the bizarre. Male participants wearing colorful traditional clothing and clownish masks dance about while wielding bamboo sticks (“sasara”) in one hand, and long red phallus symbols in the other hand. The males repeatedly strike the bamboo and phallus together while chasing after females and playfully probing them with the phallus. Tradition has it that women who are touched in this manner will be blessed with healthy children.

    Access Buses bound for Otari Onsen run direct from Tsugaike to Chikuni several times per day. Chikuni Suwa Shrine is located less than a 5-minute walk from the “Chikuni Guchi” bus stop along this route.

  • Tsugaike Nature Park Fall Foliage Festival

    Tsugaike Nature Park Foliage Festival

    Autumn arrives early to the Tsugaike Nature Park, owing to its 1,900 m elevation, and its arrival is marked by a waves of vivid reds, yellows and oranges that splash across the trees and transform the landscape into a final blaze of colors before the impending arrival of cold, white winter. In addition to the chance to enjoy the fall foliage, the festival includes opportunities to purchase various local products and to partake of free food such as the local specialty of miso soup with handpicked mushrooms.

  • Otari Mushroom Festival (“Kinoko Matsuri”)

    Otari Village is famous nationwide for its mushrooms, and this “festival” popular amongst enthusiasts, features various locally grown mushrooms including the extremely popular “maitake” variety. Here you will have the chance to see, taste (in the form of free mushroom soup) and buy the many mushrooms on hand. There is even an all-you-can-eat mushroom food buffet for those with a serious appetite for fungi. Please note that the amount and varieties of mushrooms on hand can vary from year to year.

  • Buckwheat Harvest Festival (“Shin-Soba Matsuri”)

    Otari Shin Soba Festival (buckwheat harvest festival)

    Fresh handmade soba noodles made from newly harvested buckwheat are available at multiple locations throughout the village of Otari. Visit a variety of shops and receive stamps in exchange for a chance to win prizes, such as – you guessed it – freshly made soba.
